Valerian is safe! From Your Herbalist... by: Natural Remedies Pro
You can safely take 200 mg of dried herb 3 times daily. Do not exceed this dosage unless advised by your competent health care professional. Do take a break every couple of weeks. Remember, too large doses or long term, constant use will produce side-effects such as headaches, excitability, digestive disturbances, sleep and heart disturbances. No reports of drug interactions (FDA) or impaired driving ability exist. I prefer using Valerian in combinations with other sedative herbs: hops and passion flower. By combination I mean a multi-ingredient herbal preparation. Some sources warn that Valerian could cause dependency issues, that said I haven't witnessed a single case of such in my 17 years career.
